AMS and Education

Supporting our future

AMS Technology Solutions started providing CNC machines to the education market in 1995. In the following years we have supplied hundreds of schools, colleges and universities with high quality products such as laser cutters, filter extraction units and now 3D printers and safety cabinets.

The education sector has been forced to endure much financial hardship over the last decade which in many cases has forced the closure of entire Design and Technology departments. In these turbulent times it is more important than ever to ensure that the correct decision is made first time when purchasing a capital piece of equipment such as a laser cutter. The benefits of acquiring high quality reliable products with a good support network and stable supply chain are obvious. We provide a comprehensive advice service for schools and colleges that are considering addressing the technology issues relating to laser cutting and 3D printing within the education curriculum. This service comes as part of our ongoing commitment to help in the development and training of our UK industrial future.

Safety in Schools

Keeping students safe for a brighter future

The recent revelations about the release of micro particles into the atmosphere during the 3D printing process has caused much concern for education institutions around the world. Our supplier, KORA 3D, have worked with Cleapss (the Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services) and the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) for over 4 years to help identify potential VOCS (Volatile Organic Compounds) which become airborne through the process of FFF/FDM desktop 3D Printing. Some of the dangers are well known such as the harmful VOCS given off when printing ABS. The dangers associated with other types of filament such as PLA are less clear and research is ongoing into the potential harmful effects. What is now well proven is that no matter which filament is used there are vast amounts of micro particles released that can make their way into the airway. With continued exposure it is difficult to see how these particles cannot be harmful. Recognition of this is now being evidenced by most of the major manufacturers producing filtered hoods and covers for their 3D printers.

Having been closely involved in the research KORA 3D have developed a range of enclosures that can accommodate the majority of 3D printers available today including of course their own range of high quality machines. These lockable safety cabinets include other safety features including heat sensors and fire extinguishers in addition to the safe filtration of the air through the recyclable HEPA filter system. It is this “safety first” attitude to provide a universal solution for all 3D printers that sets KORA 3D aside from other manufacturers who are only looking to fix their own systems. Their commitment to providing a safe environment for our children while they learn the skills they need to succeed in their future is highly commendable and we are proud to be associated with them.

Testimonials

“I have been delighted with my laser cutter, which I have had for 9 years now and is still going strong. It has really been worth purchasing a good quality machine that I can rely on. I have been equally delighted with the quality of the aftercare that AMS provide. Dave is very responsive and I always know that if I have any questions he will get back to me quickly with an answer, giving me clear instructions if anything needs adjusting on the software or machine  He is also regularly in Scotland in person.”

Jenny Smith, Edinburgh Laser Cutting Studio

“Superb support from AMS Technology Solutions Ltd – second to none. They have gone above and beyond to help me deal with any questions I’ve had, and on-going support with my laser-cutter and software. Very impressed with their knowledge, friendliness and technical know-how, in a field that is literally cutting edge!”

Kate – Cornwall Cast – (Extremely satisfied customer)

“We have three Cad Cam Technology laser cutters and we’ve used AMS Technology Solutions for over 12 years. As a company AMS/CadCam Technology are fully supportive of the educational sector and innovative in software and machines. They offer a comprehensive package of support for machines and software.

I’m constantly learning on our machines and every time Dave calls in to service, I get another update on the latest changes and trends within the sector. Dave is a source of knowledge and will help at any time, he’s just a call away. He has supported students with information and tips and in their own start-up companies.

Service support is second to none on breakdown or software and it’s always a quick turnaround. Importantly the machines are reliable and “student proof”. We have tried other machines in the past but find CADCAM are the most robust user-friendly machines.”

Dave Bentley, Textiles Technician, University of Huddersfield

“We have been customers of AMS Technology Solutions for over a decade. The Laser cutting equipment has proven itself robust and reliable while the support and backup, whether in person or remotely has been exemplary.”

Philip Evans, Senior Technician, Redland Green School.

“Our first laser cutter arrived in the summer of 2007 and is still going strong. Considering how much it is used, it really hasn’t needed much maintenance at all. Whenever we do need support, engineer David Barkham at AMS Technology Solutions is easy to reach and is always amazing at resolving any issues quickly. We now have a 100W laser cutter to accompany our original 30W, it was a no-brainer to stick with AMS. I would highly recommend these machines, especially for an educational facility like ours. The customer service is outstanding and if something does go wrong with your laser cutter they will have your machine back working in no time.“

Gillian Duffy, Camberwell College of the Arts

“We first bought our FB750 Laser Cutter over ten years ago now, it has been a workhorse and a solid testament to British engineering. When we had the opportunity to purchase an additional piece of kit, going back to AMS Technology Solutions Ltd was the easiest decision I ever made. With brilliant support and excellent staff to work with, the purchasing and maintenance of the equipment makes the whole process so easy and pleasurable”

Jason Jones, Technical Manager, Liverpool Hope University
